ALLbum : Passion Pit - Gossamer (2012)

Refers to the dictionary, Gossamer means the very fine thread made by spiders or any very light delicate material. What the connection between the titles album with 13 songs inside it? Well, each song represent different kind of story, the emotion and feeling that express into music with amazing lyrics. I found out about one fact through internet that states the band vocalist, Michael Angelakos makes this album based on true story of his life. A good rhythmic synthesizer has shown in the first track called “Take a Walk”. These songs depict about the past history of Angelakos family that come to America and build a new life. It’s also show on how their determination to struggle in foreign country. Contrast from the first track, “I’ll Be Alright” captures the fast beat of sampler sound that very unique characters for a song I’d say. You can hear much like of squirrel sound in the ‘Alvin and the Chipmunk’ film inside these songs. It’s a love song, I guess.

The third track, “Carried Away” shows a wonderful high pitch of synthesizer sound. The story is about college life student and making a good friend. If you need a sweet conversation with your lover or your wife, why not listen to “Constant Conversations” in the fourth track. It’s chill, cool and relaxes, you can name it anything that will express your equilibrium to this song but to me only one word I’d say, euphoric. These smooth songs combined some sort of genre that includes chill wave, R&B/soul and jazz, I guess. Although, I categorized as a love song but some part of the lyrics shows different meaning. Another high pitch of synthesizer sound at the entrance is “Mirrored Sea” in the fifth track.

Did you ever hear the ghost crying? Why not listen to “Cry like a Ghost” in the sixth track. Well, is not a horror song but still a high pitch of synthesizer and the way ghost crying is more to be modern electronic screaming of ghost. The full story is not about a ghost but one particular girl that Michael mentions it inside this song. I’m really interested at the last part of the song that captures the waving sound of synthesizer instrument. “On My Way” is more likely a wedding celebration song to me. Like the previous track, these songs also mention a few girls name. Next track would be “Hideaway” which has a fuzzy choir at the beginning of the song.

“Two Veils to Hide My Face” was the shortest song that I never heard before, around 33 seconds. For me, it wasn't a song at all, it just a meaningful poet. It’s simple, just using voice tone as a melody. Is that love could be such greed? Truth or not, you must hear “Love Is Greed”. Awesome entrance with honestly lyric makes “It’s Not My Fault, I’m Happy” one of my favorite song from this album. I’m quiet confuse with some sort that I think could probably a suicide lyrics of “Where We Belong”. You need to listen carefully for these songs. The last track that includes “American Blood” which I think it would be a patriotic song for them. Overall, this album would be one of the best album that I ever heard in recent years. Overall, I give 91 out of 100.
