ALLbum : Passion Pit - Chunk Of Change (2008)
Once upon a time, there a young
man named Michael Angelakos wants to gift a surprise present for his girlfriend
at Valentine Day. He recorded a few the lap pop serenade songs for his
girlfriend. Unfortunately, the mix tapes he recorded maybe didn't reach by his girlfriend. But, his friends were excited by what they heard and suddenly a
band of Passion Pit was born, a record deal signed and last but not least, the
extended play, Chunk of Change are recorded and released.
That a simple synopsis about how
they start a career of being musician. Although, the mix tapes show Michael
Angelakos passionate love to his girlfriend at Valentine Day but the term of
Chunk of Change maybe have another meaning in my point of view. Firstly, maybe
change in terms of personal behavior, attitude or manners from bad into good
person. Secondly, maybe with their knowledge and experience about music, they
demonstrate the alternative pop music layered with a little bit of experiment.
Whatever the reason about the title, there are 6 songs inside these extended
play.
#1 I've got Your Number
A first step to tackle a girl
that you’re really liked “is write down your name and your phone number”.
Mostly covers by hand-clapping framework with some of noisy sample, a groove
sound that feeling like outer space song. But, some part of the song shows a
funny rhyme, “diggy,
diggy, diggy, diggy, diggy, boom, boom”.
#2
Smile Upon Me
Smile is the best things that
express happy feeling in our lives. Never ending upbeats synthesizer sound from
the start until the end of this song. If you listen closely to the lyrics, it
does not demonstrate about love but more to friendship attitude. Here some of
the lyrics below.
There’s a place in
this world,
Where people like
me are found by people like you,
......
Oh yeah, you’re the
best damn friend that I’ll ever have,
You’ll always smile
upon me when the season’s bad,
You’ll always make
me feel best even when I’m blue,
You’ll always smile
upon me and I’ll smile upon you too.
#3 Cuddle Fuddle
Cuddle means to hug somebody
close in your arms to show love or affection while fuddle means unable to think
clearly usually as a result of drinking alcohol. I've not recommended this song
although it’s beautifully layered with bouquet of synthesizer. Here some part
from the lyrics.
I filled the
bucket,
I spilled the
bucket,
Out on the floor,
Then,
Michael Angelakos with his thought dreaming about fairy tale character,
Rapunzel, a princess with very long hair.
Let down your hair,
Let down your hair,
Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair.
#4 Live To Tell the Tale
Did you wonder where I get the
title name for my blog? Well, this song as my favorite song from these EP
really inspired me as its captivating stories about beautiful places from my
point of view. Not imagine a place as utopia, but with these amazing poetry
lyrics, its sound more to be storyteller song. Here some part from the lyrics.
This is the room
where we always dreamed of grass and splendid evenings,
Emitting
frequencies, lost between the leaves and things,
My favorite phrase from this song is the beginning of chorus part below.
God bless that
smile on your face,
God bless the seeds
in the ground,
God bless my
family’s keen gaze,
Somewhat
Michael Angelakos feels to change himself to be better man.
I’m sorry I’m such
a bore,
I’m sorry I am so
hard,
I swear to God,
I’ll be good,
From now on, and,
But
The story with no ending
Yet
#5
Better Things
Start with a kid saying:
That was our fifth
song,
And I hope you
enjoyed it,
Now this would be our
best song,
That you have ever
heard,
The dirt bike’s
going on stage,
Thank you.
This
funky and continuous upbeat sound with a theme about love really suit for
married couple. Last track would be #6
Sleepyhead. Well, I have enough to review about that song for sure.
Meanwhile, an unreleased song of “Batty
Lashes” that never make into this
EP, still depicts about love and the longest duration song yet from Passion
Pit. Another unreleased song, “Tons of
Guns”, its sound similar to a song, “The
Reeling”. I think it’s a revolutionized of artwork. Overall, I give 75/100 for this EP.
