ALLbum : The 1975 (2013)
An eponymous debut album by English rock band, The 1975. The quartet originating from Manchester, lead by Matthew Healy as a vocalist. Debut as their self-title album, The 1975 consist 16 song in total as a standard edition of the album. Their musical style is consider as rock with wide variety of genre such as electronic pop, emo, indie, punk, rhythm n' blues, soul as well as pop. Most of the song have massive influence of 80's power-pop to 90's soul mixed together with the essence of Brit pop as usual to British band. Black and white theme always seen in several music video. Most of the song depict about love relationship with slightly darker element of sex and drug. Its relate to their past experience especially their frontman, Matthew Healy. Its not surprise that some of song title is too sensual such 'Sex' while other seems to be villain theme such 'Robbers'.
Their are portrayed as a visually aesthetic in term of personal style or behavior, sense of fashion or illuminate lights of background props while performing live show on a stage. Other thing that attract the band is Matthew Healy accent while singing a song. Also known as Matty, his pure British accent is consider as cool and unique in my perspective even British people couldn't understand it well. If you try to sing their song, you need to follow Matty accent. Its always happen to me. Hahaha. Thus, I review a few song that I should consider the best from them.
Lets begin with 2nd track, The City. Its pure pop rock song with drum bit introduction. Highly energetic. This song also featured on the video game of FIFA 14. Follow to 3rd track, M.O.N..E.Y. Simply sensational. A very cool song that resolve hip-hop influence shown Matty doing a rap style singing in verse while layer smoothly his voice at some point with loop break. Most important is that Matty spelling M.O.N.E.Y. before ending. Awesome. Continued to 4th track, Chocolate. A steady song with a simple riff guitar lines. The interpretative lyrics content could hides some controversy to anyone as some fan describe this song would involve into something that relates to drug addict and its habit. Before giving any conclusion, please take a look the full lyrical content of Chocolate then you can decide whether true or vice versa. Take a break in track 7th, An Encounter. Just 1 minute 14 second break that will take you escape the space of sound. The layer of sampler with some of extraterrestrial sound clip. Just breathtaking to hear this song.
Move on to 8th track, Heart Out. A mesmerizing song with a simple vintage guitar lines. An easy listening. Killer part always be the solo saxophone. Next one is Settle Down on 9th track. Again, the catchy riff guitar always tease me to hear more. But, it seems a different level to compare with 10th track, Robbers. I think this particular song composed very well in term of its simplicity, passionate and honest story-telling by Matty. You can feel his sincerity while singing out loud emotionally. These song really shown his full potential especially singing high pitch note. Notably because his voice seemingly crack at the end of the song. Its not bad at all and I guess its killer part that most of the fan loved too. Release some tension in 11th track, Girls. Yet, another super catchy song that drive the fun on it.
Next one is She Way Out on 13th track. A fairly synchronization of catchy tunes. Finally, share some soul on 15th track, Pressure. A bite of neo-soul really resolve me back in time to the 90's. Such a mellow and sexy song with fairly saxophone tune. Overall, its a good album although I review it now after its officially release 5 years ago. The album is quite balance but sometime often get a roller coaster of emotion. Cheer up with catchy tune but drowning with mellow soft tunes. Rating for their debut album, I give 88 out of 100 and I highly recommended this album to all of you.
